This Cadillac's design is so conservative

...it hurts. Coupes shouldn't be only about driving dynamics, but also about looks, striking looks, the shock of the arriving. A coupe should be like the new Lexus RC.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I think it looks upright and boring.

The Lexus brand is confusing though, unless you know the brand it is hard to tell what vehicles are in the same class as far as coupe/sedan go.

Although the ats coupe is bland, I understand why they did it. If you want something more exciting, step up to the cts coupe.

No. This is the correct direction for a brand competing with the also-conservative germans. GM already had a wangs n' thangs department back in the bad old days of Pontiac, and there's no reason to bring that back now that it's gone.

Kinja'd!!!

Though there was that one time where their designers * almost* got it right.

Lexus, intentionally wanted to call it RC instead of IS coupe, it gives them the freedom to make it wider, use different design details and possibly charge a little more for it, like BMW does with the 4 Series.

Also, I'm not sure the new CTS will get a coupe version.

Solution: Cadillac's face on the Lexus body.

I still think it is silly, it would be like calling a 4door beetle a Panther.

And, so, your counter argument is symbolically summed up with the Lexus RC - possibly the worst-looking coupe to come out from a mainstream manufacturer in a decade. Interesting.

You know what other sporty coupe designs were deemed wild and adventurous when they first came out, only to be held in comparatively poor light today? The Audi TT, the Mercedes-Benz CLC, the second-gen BMW 6-series, the Mazda RX-8, the Nissan 370Z, the Nissan GT-R... and the list goes on.

Good design is not about any one thing - it's about many things, including finding a balance of a design that acknowledges contemporary trends, but doesn't necessarily conform to them. By doing so, you can create a car that may not be as instantly flashy as others, but will age much better over time.

It's really more of a 2-door sedan. I like it, though compared to the awkward CTS coupe I can see how some would think it's too conservative.

The Lexus RC on the other hand is fucking hideous IMO.

I kinda like the ATS coupe, in a similar way to liking the Audi A5. They aren't as sleek as some, but are still kind of handsome, and not as boring as a Solara or an Accord coupe.

However, RC is weird... and the front profile shows it... the grille is an odd shape, and obviously low... but the hump above the grille in the hood line is ridiculous, the lines are over styled, and the lighting is kind of ridiculous, with the DRLs in the front, and the tail lights that stick out past the sheet metal on the rear fenders.

I am not a fan of Lexus' design language, and I think it is over-wrought. Infiniti used to be really good, but is quickly following Lexus into over-styled ridiculousness.

I wish there were an affordable coupe that were as well proportioned, and cleanly styled, even albeit with less expensive materials, like the F-type Coupe, and the Aston Martin coupes.

Hyundai Genesis has a decent profile proportion, but the details are wrong on it, too... the ridiculous grille, and fake hood scoops, and the odd drooping quarter windows...

Agreed. Although the Japanese design language isn't really up my alley.

People say the CTS-V coupe is a polarizing look, and it seems to be that way. I've heard a lot of people say they don't like the look of it, but I dig it.

I think it looks great. It's a subtle kind of aggressive, not the "HEY GUYS LOOK AT ME I'M SO WACKY WOOBLOOBLOOBLOO" of the Lexus.

Exactly. Older cars that still look good now tended to have at least slightly conservative styling when new. Implementing too many trends or taking them to an extreme tends to increase aging of a design.

There are differences between plain boring and conservative though. It's purely my opinion and I wouldn't buy anything from either company, but if you compare the Corolla with the Golf over the years and car generations I think you've got a clear illustration of conservative (Golf) versus boring (Corolla)

I think the ATS Coupe is simply amazing. It is elegant in the truest sense of the word - pleasingly graceful and stylish in appearance. It is not a bad boy racer, nor a silly caricature of what Toyota thinks drivers will like. I love the wreathless crest. I'm a BMW guy, but Cadillac has been on a roll for some time.

I dig it precisely because it's polarizing. While Cadillacs already tend to stand out in a crowd, the CTS Coupe (not even getting to the -V yet) just shouts at you from across the showroom and draws you in. Among the sea of brand new XTS V-Sports, 2014 CTS sedans, Escalades, SRXes, and ATS sedans at my local Cadillac dealership, the CTS Coupe was simply magnetic.

RX 8 is a good looking car and it was quite conservatively styled save for the suicide passenger doors, which were supercool. The second gen BMW 6 series was never seen as wild and adventurous, only as 'sad and bloated'.

I agree with you for the rest.
